24 Hours of Vashon Magic: A Whirlwind Island Adventure

Vashon Island is a world away yet just a short ferry ride from the mainland and offers a unique blend of tranquility and adventure. We decided to pack a full day (and night!) with island experiences, and at the end of our time we realized that we had only scratched the surface.

8:30 AM: Eager to start our day, our adventure began with an early ferry from West Seattle's Fauntleroy terminal. The crisp sea air and the stunning backdrop of Mount Rainier made the 20-minute ride a scenic delight. It’s the perfect transition from city bustle to island calm.

9:00 AM: Upon exiting the ferry, we were immediately enveloped by Vashon's lush greenery, towering trees and vintage farmhouses. The peaceful drive into town was a gentle reminder of the island's slower pace.

9:30 AM: A visit to Vashon Bakery was an essential. Fluffy pastries and robust coffee fueled our morning as we meandered through town, discovering charming shops and art galleries. From bookstores to consignment clothing, Vashon's town center is a treasure trove of unique finds. An hour flew by, but it would have been easy to spend much more time here.

11:00 AM: With the sun shining and beckoning us outdoors, we headed to KVI Beach. The sandy shores and breathtaking views provided the ideal backdrop for relaxation and contemplation. It's a reminder of how easily accessible natural beauty is on Vashon.

1:00 PM: Lunch at Snapdragon was a culinary highlight. Our incredible baked goods and savory specials were enjoyed in their enchanting garden patio, and were a testament to Vashon's thriving food scene.

2:00 PM: After lunch we headed over to
Vashon Adventures at Jensen Point Park for a perfect afternoon activity. We rented sea kayaks and spent a 90 minutes paddling through Quartermaster Harbor, encountering playful seals and graceful sailboats. The harbor is ripe for exploration, and we vowed to return someday for more.  Only available May through October.

4:00 PM: We checked into our Airbnb, nestled on an old farm and orchard,  that provided a serene retreat. Our host’s warm welcome, local history lessons, and fresh farm produce made us feel right at home. We embraced the island's laid-back vibe and simply enjoyed the tranquility and caught up on some reading.
6:00 PM: Dinner at May's Kitchen was a revelation. The Thai food was exceptional, proving that Vashon punches above its weight in the culinary department.  Easily one of the best Thai food meals in the whole region. Pro tip - it's popular, make s reservation.

7:30 PM: The evening's main event was a performance at the Vashon Center for the Arts. The impressive musical lineup was our goal but the accompanying art show in the lobby area was an unexpected bonus.

9:00 PM: After a day packed with adventure, we retreated to our Airbnb. The combination of fresh air, good food, and physical activity ensured a deep, restful night and a chorus of local frogs lulled us to sleep.

Next day at 8:00 AM: Our final morning began with coffee and scones from the legendary Vashon Roasterie. This local hotspot is a must-visit for its exceptional coffee and friendly atmosphere.
9:00 AM: As we prepared to depart, we stopped at a few Vashon farm stands. Seeing the farmers at work and stocking up on fresh produce was the perfect way to conclude our island adventure. These farm-fresh souvenirs will serve as a delicious reminder of our Vashon getaway.  There is also a farmers market in town on Saturdays  from 10am-3pm April through October.

Our 24-hour Vashon adventure was a whirlwind of natural beauty, culinary delights, and cultural experiences. The island's unique charm and slower pace left us feeling refreshed and inspired. If you're looking for a quick escape from Seattle or Tacoma with a big impact, Vashon Island is the ideal destination.
