Seattle Eater's review of Vashon Island's Culinary Charm: Pretty Good, But Misses the Mark on Stays

Seattle Eater's recent dive into Vashon Island's food scene, "Llama Happy Hour and Fried Watercress: What to Eat and Drink on Quirky Vashon Island," is an entertaining insite into Vashon's food scene. Sharon McDonnell paints a vibrant, delicious picture of an island proudly marching to the beat of its own drum. The article is packed with fun, accurate insights into the island's unique spirit,  encapsulated by the quote, "If you’re too eccentric for Seattle, this is where you end up." From "Pop Pop Bottle Shop's" delightfully "Weird" beer section to the unexpected joy of "fried watercress" at May Kitchen + Bar, the piece genuinely captures the culinary quirks and quality that make Vashon a worthwhile destination. The mention of "Llama Happy Hour"  embodies the island's charmingly unconventional vibe butbis clearly written from the perspectiveof an outsider.
However, after a fantastic journey through (some of) Vashon's diverse eateries and sips, the article unfortunately fizzles out when it comes to suggesting accommodations. The piece narrows its focus to "Lodges on Vashon" as the ideal overnight stay. While "The Lodges" might offer a lovely, Scandi-chic experience, it feels like Seattle Eater completely missed the true essence of staying on Vashon Island and went for the low hanging fruit.
Vashon's strength isn't in a singular, polished hotel; it's in the rich, quirky patchwork of interesting and eccentric short-term rentals scattered across its landscape. For decades, Vashon has been a haven for those seeking unique getaways – from rustic cabins nestled in the woods to charming, offbeat beach cottages with incredible stories. These rentals, often reflecting the very "eccentric" spirit the article so rightly celebrates, are the heart of Vashon's overnight appeal.
Frankly, Seattle Eater, stick with the food reviews! You absolutely nailed the culinary side, but by only highlighting "The Lodges," you kind of missed the whole point of actually staying on the island. Vashon has a long, proud history of providing quirky, memorable lodging just a short, picturesque ferry ride from Seattle, offering an immersion into the island's unique character that a single modern hotel simply can't replicate.
